Welcome to my April newsletter. Summer seems to have passed us by in Sydney, and winter will be here before we know it!

Bespoke Shirts at J. H. Cutler

I am pleased to say that our bespoke shirt business has shown substantial growth over the last 12 months thanks to the time, care and attention lavished upon it by my very able assistant Sam Hazelton. In particular Sam has spent a lot of time talking to our clients about exactly what they wanted as far as their bespoke shirts were concerned.
As a result we have:

Reduced our prices, which now start from a very competitive $330 per shirt, with absolutely no loss of quality
Consolidated our bespoke shirt making here in Sydney, with only a very few of our shirts continuing to be made in Italy to meet specific client preferences
Reviewed our systems and procedures to maximise efficiency and quality
Introduced an average turnaround time of 21 days, from your placing an order to delivery
Greatly expanded the range of shirt fabrics that you have to choose from, primarily by increasing the range of fabric suppliers we use.

Update on Our Search for the Oldest J. H. Cutler Garment

I mentioned in February that we have launched a quest to find the oldest existing garment made by my company. Details are to be included in a book being written on J. H. Cutler by David Dowsey, the writer and journalist. So far the oldest garment to come to light is a 1948 dinner suit. In times gone by it was common practise for the male members of prominent country families to ask the company to store their formal clothing at our premises in Sydney ready for use when they came to town. This practise all but died out in the 1960s and this suit has remained unclaimed to this day.
I am really hopeful of finding something older but it is a good start.

New Season Fabric Ranges

As is usual at this time of year I have now received a number of new fabric books from my suppliers in Europe. As they have been put together for the 2012 European summer they are well suited (excuse the pun!) to year round wear here in Australia. You are welcome to have a browse through them next time you are in the showroom.

London Style By John Cutler

Many of you will remember that I launched this made to measure business in 2010 to market alongside my existing more upmarket bespoke business. Recently I have made some changes in the sourcing of the London Style garments, and by moving to working with a manufacturer in Europe have been able to offer a considerable reduction in price. London Style made to measure suits are now priced between $1,750 and $2,500 depending on the choice of fabric, jackets and blazers are $1,350, trousers and waistcoats $395, and overcoats from $2,150 to $2,500, again depending on choice of fabric.

As I originally expected London Style made to measure garments primarily appeal to a different, and decidedly younger market, to my traditional hand crafted bespoke garments, but the option is there to complement your existing wardrobe with some less expensive casual garments should you so desire. Run of Positive Media Stories Continues

In recent months J. H. Cutler has been fortunate to be featured in a number of very positive stories across a range of top quality media. April has been no exception with an excellent story appearing in JETGALA magazine. This ultra luxury Singapore - based title’s readership consists of executive jet owners and users throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Happy New Year and welcome to my first Online Newsletter of 2012. Before moving on to our latest news I know that we had some technical issues when sending out our final newsletter of 2011, so please accept my apologies if you received two copies of that particular newsletter.

New Bespoke Tweed Car Coat

I am absolutely delighted with a new tweed car coat that I have recently designed and had made by my workshop team. The 305g tweed, in a heather green, purple and orangey red check design comes from the excellent English company Dashing Tweeds. It features a fly front, buffalo horn buttons, a pure silk purple lining, slanting welted pockets on each side and a special additional pocket that's ideal for carrying the paper, or a bottle of grog if you are that way inclined. It can be topped off with a matching tweed cap, the like of which have become quite fashionable of late.

Car coats were originally designed for driving in open topped cars, which could get nippy in winter, or at high speeds throughout the year. Today I think they make a stylish and useful addition to any gentleman's wardrobe. They can be worn with business or casual suits, and with casual weekend wear. I would certainly encourage you to invest in one, particularly with some of the exciting new fabrics that are now available from the likes of Dashing Tweeds, and would be interested to hear your opinion on this oft-neglected garment.

J. H. Cutler -The Book

I am very excited indeed that the journalist and author David Dowsey has decided to write a book on the history of J. H. Cutler. He is currently gathering information, and as part of this process we are trying to unearth the oldest existing J. H. Cutler garment or artefact. Maybe you, or a member of your family, can help?

As you know the company was founded in 1884, and I would like to think that over the last 128 years some items have been hidden away in a wardrobe or attic, but not so well hidden that no one is aware of their existence! The most notable items, including the absolute oldest, are guaranteed inclusion in the book, as are their owners if they so desire.

Any other thoughts, anecdotes or reminiscences about the company, myself and/or my family would also be much appreciated. Hopefully they will all be fit to print! I will keep you informed on the progress of this project over the coming months.

J. H. Cutler in The Media

The excellent coverage that J. H. Cutler received in high quality media in 2011 continued right to the end with a wonderful story appearing in the Summer 2011 edition of IL Tridente. This is a high quality half yearly magazine that is sent out to clients of Maserati in Australia and New Zealand. During the year stories featuring my business appeared in the International Herald Tribune, the Australian Financial Review, the Sydney Morning Herald, Oryx, the Qatar Airways in flight magazine and Lexus, the Lexus owners magazine amongst others. I remain most appreciative of the interest shown by editors and journalists in Australia and overseas in J. H. Cutler and the quality of garments that we produce.

Quick Trip To Europe

I will be away on a trip to Europe from 9 th to 18 th February furthering my trade contacts in London and elsewhere, and catching up with a couple of UK based clients. To help me face the rigours of the European winter I will be taking with me my new tweed car coat, and my suits will include a light to mid grey heavy flannel 3-piece suit to be worn with a purple silk tie and cashmere scarf, whilst brown tasselled Edward Green shoes will be matched with brown leather cashmere lined gloves, belt, watch strap and wallet.

Reduced Prices On All Silk Ties For Christmas

Getting into the festive spirit we have reduced the prices on our entire stock of pure silk ties until the end of the year. For example Stefano Ricci ties imported from Italy are now $250 each, down from $350 and $400, whilst all other silk ties have been reduced to $100 from $200. All would make excellent gifts.

New Bespoke Shirt Fabrics

I am delighted to say that demand for our bespoke shirts has been very brisk indeed in recent months. If you are thinking of placing an order for shirts you may be interested to know that we have recently received new fabric books from Italy and Switzerland to augment our already formidable selection of colours, patterns and fabric types. Most of our bespoke shirts continue to be made here in Sydney, whilst in order to offer our clients the broadest possible choice of fabrics and styles certain of our shirts continue to be made by a small family firm in Florence. Delivery normally takes about four weeks but over the Christmas and New Year period you would be advised to allow a couple of weeks extra.

J. H. Cutler In The Media

As I suggested in my last newsletter we continue to receive excellent coverage in the media. In a first for us J. H. Cutler was prominently featured in an article entitled “Bespoke tailors and their customers are cut from a different cloth” that was published in the International Herald Tribune on 15th October. I was delighted to receive positive feedback from several clients who read the paper. Yet another article “Tailor Made” appeared in edition 37 of the Lexus magazine that was distributed to Lexus owners in Australia and New Zealand, also in October. And finally on 17th November I was delighted to contribute to an article by Luke Malone on the www.smh.com.au website entitled “Suit up like Barak Obama”.

Welcome to my latest newsletter in which I focus on bespoke tailoring, which despite steady growth in bespoke shirts and shoes and fashion accessories, remains the core of my business.

New Bespoke Fabrics from J. H. Cutler

I am delighted to inform you that J. H. Cutler is now offering new truly bespoke fabrics designed to your specific requirements that you can order for your next bespoke suit. You can personally design the fabric, with my input if required, to feature any colour or combination of colours, any pattern and any weight. I will then arrange for the fabric to be hand produced on a wooden 100-year-old sample loom at a Bradford mill in West Yorkshire, England. A town that has been producing woollen fabrics since the 18th century. It’s the old style wooden loom that allows us to produce the relatively small quantity required for an individual suit. Bespoke fabrics such as this have featured in Hollywood blockbusters, fashion catwalks and celebrity fashion shoots. An esteemed client of many years standing has already ordered J. H. Cutler’s first length of bespoke fabric that I am currently awaiting delivery of. Zegna's "Cool Effect" Fabric

With summer just around the corner I thought you would be interested in a new fabric that I now have available from the Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna. Incorporating cutting edge fabric technology developments, Zegna has produced an Australian wool suiting fabric that is not only feather light, soft and sumptuous, but also replicates the properties of white fabrics by reflecting 80% of the heat created by sunlight. This compares to the 20% of heat that a regular dark suit reflects. It is offered in various colours and I find it hard to think of another fabric that, excuse the pun, is so well suited to the Australian summer.

Water Repellent Suiting Fabrics

Another fabric type that meets the diverse challenges of our weather here in Australia where it can be sunny one minute and pouring the next, are the water repellent high performance suiting fabrics now available from most of the world’s leading fabric houses. The light weight pure woollen weave has a finish, that doesn’t absorb water and literally allows it to form into small beads and roll off the surface, but does not effect the way the fabric breathes. Just give it a quick shake and its perfectly dry. One of the leading fabric houses that that I have done business with for many, many years is Dormeuil. Their “Aquaplan” 7½ oz. pure wool 130’s fabric is soft, light and comfortable and its properties make an ideal suit for travelling. Available in a large range of colours, pinstripes and checks, I have fabric samples that you are welcome to have a look at.

J. H. Cutler In The Media

In todays challenging business environment it is important that we maintain a profile in the media to help us attract new clients, and in the last few weeks I am delighted to say that J. H. Cutler has featured in two excellent articles that have been published. In the October edition of Oryx, the Qatar Airways in-flight magazine, J. H. Cutler was included in an article featuring some of the world’s top bespoke tailors alongside tailors from London, New York, Milan, Hong Kong and Moscow.
In the September 9-11 issue of the Australian Financial Review J. H. Cutler featured in an excellent article on handmade shoes with mentions of both the brands I stock, Edward Green of Northampton and Stefano Bemer from Florence.
I have copies of both articles if you are interested in reading them and believe that we are featured in some more articles that are due to be published prior to Christmas.

Welcome to my latest online newsletter. It�s amazing how quickly the year is slipping by. It will be spring before we know it. This month I thought I would focus on our bespoke shirts, including news on new fabrics and an exciting bonus offer that we have recently introduced.

Our Bespoke Shirts

At J. H. Cutler we offer bespoke shirts for business, formal and leisure wear with each garment individually tailored to meet your specific measurements and requirements. You can choose from a large number of collar and cuff styles and your shirts can be further personalised by adding monograms or special pocket shapes. Our shirt buttons are mother of pearl and all other trimmings the best that money can buy. All our shirts are made either here in Sydney, or in Italy. This enables us to offer you the widest possible choice of fabrics and styles. The end result is a luxury item that embodies elegance, style, comfort and perfect fit.

Our Fabrics

We pride ourselves on offering the widest choice of high quality shirtings for you to choose from. The hundreds of materials sourced from the world�s leading fabric houses include voiles, linens, silks, viyella and Sea Island, poplin, Egyptian, Oxford and easy care cottons.

We have also recently introduced a couple of new options. For those of you who want the ultimate in luxury and fineness of cloth we now have a Super 300 fabric in white only. Our Prices

We have held the price of most of our bespoke shirts at $380 for over two years now and I am happy to confirm that this price will be maintained for at least another 12 months. The Australian wool shirting fabric will be a little more expensive at $450 per shirt, whilst some like the Super 300 will be around $600 per shirt. Guidance on prices will obviously always be given when fabrics are being considered.

We are now offering you the opportunity of receiving an extra bespoke shirt at no additional cost when you place an order for five bespoke shirts at one time. The additional shirt can be up to the value of the average price paid for the other five shirts. For example an order for five shirts at $380 each will entitle you to one additional shirt worth $380 completely free. Welcome to a special addition of my Online Newsletter that contains two significant announcements. The first concerns a special offer I am making, during the month of July only, of a free pair of trousers with every suit ordered. The second seeks expressions of interest in a unique tour to London that I am considering running early in 2012:

End of Financial Year Woe

Between now and the 31st July I am offering with each suit ordered, an extra pair of trousers for that suit at no additional cost. The offer applies to suits made from any of the many suiting fabrics that I stock including those supplied by Loro Piana, Scabal, Dormeuil, Ermenegildo Zegna and Holland & Sherry.

The inclusion of a second pair of trousers can considerably extend the “life” of a suit, as there is a tendency for the trousers to wear out before the jacket.

The offer applies to all suits including those for formal wear, and covers not only bespoke suits from J. H. Cutler, but also made to measure suits from my London Style by John Cutler range as well.

The Cutler London Artisan Sojourn

In recent months it has been suggested to me by several clients that I again consider an idea that I have been mulling over for a number of years, which is to take advantage of my years of accumulated knowledge and contacts, to lead a small and exclusive group on a trip to London to meet with a number of leading local artisans in their workrooms. They would all be masters of their individual trades and the trip would offer a unique insight into their work.

I took advantage of a recent brief business trip to London to ensure that such a trip would indeed be viable and was delighted with the positive response I received from my contacts over there.

In brief the key elements included in the luxury package would be:

A 9 day trip with 6 nights in London
Accommodation in an iconic 5star West End hotel
First class air travel, most probably with Emirates or Singapore Airlines

Meals at a number of London’s Best Restaurants
Visits to between 12 and 15 artisans across a range of high end luxury goods and associated industries
I will lead the group throughout the entire trip
Numbers restricted to 10-12 people
Partners welcome to accompany their spouses
Timing to be finalised but most likely departure mid March - early May 2012
Indicative cost $50,000

I would of course also be happy to discuss the idea further with you, or answer any questions you might have and would be happy for you to share this information with others.

If successful further trips to London or other centres of excellence such as Florence might well be considered.

I am very excited about the chance to share some of what I have learnt over the years with you and have been encouraged by the positive feedback received to date. I very much hope I have the opportunity of turning the concept into reality.

I am now able to offer you finely tooled blazer buttons and top quality embroidered blazer badges made by Benson & Clegg in London. Established in 1937 all of their buttons are actually made in England, with over 120 styles and designs to choose from. With blazer badges there are more than 80 different badges available. I have a number of examples of both that you can look at next time you pay me a visit.

Meriton Sydney Invitational Golf Tournament
This year I was again happy to support the Meriton Sydney Invitational corporate golf tournament by donating a prize of bespoke shirts to be auctioned at their Gala Charity Dinner which was attended by 350 guests. With all proceeds going to the Westmead Children’s Hospital it was a fantastic achievement that the target of raising $50,000 was soundly beaten with $60,000 being the final amount donated. A truly wonderful effort by John Small and his dedicated team of helpers.

London Style By John Cutler
You may recall that last year I launched a made to measure business, London Style By John Cutler, to complement my existing J.H. Cutler bespoke business. Whilst not appealing to everybody, made to measure does offer the opportunity to maybe expand your casual wardrobe, or introduce a younger member of your family to tailored clothing at a lower price point than bespoke. London Style offers access to my full range of fabrics including Dormeuil, Scabal and Loro Piana with suit prices starting at $3,500, jackets from $2,750 and trousers from $750.

Since starting my career in London in the mid-1960s I have tried to visit Europe, and more particularly London, at least once a year to meet with European based clients, suppliers and other trade contacts. I am therefore delighted to announce that I have been able to negotiate a facility that allows me to meet with clients in private rooms at 9/10 Savile Row.

I believe that this presents a wonderful opportunity to expand the J. H. A Classic Overcoat is a Wardrobe Staple
I consider a classic overcoat to be a gentleman’s wardrobe staple. If you are thinking about purchasing a new overcoat, or a car coat, for winter I would be delighted to talk to you about the benefits of choosing the bespoke option. I am sure those of you who travel on a regular basis to the northern hemisphere would find this to be particularly relevant. There are a number of fabric choices that I feel are especially suited to this type of garment including pure wool, cashmere, vicuna and tweed. Also worth considering is a 50/50 wool and cashmere mix which offers the ideal combination of softness and durability. I have significant range of fabric samples that I would be happy to show you.

Flat Caps Back in Fashion
The flat cap, once the sole preserve of the British working class, has undergone a fashion renaissance over the last six to nine months to become the perfect fashion accessory for the modern man. Flat caps, which have proved popular with stars such as David Beckham, Samuel L. Jackson and Justin Timberlake, are being worn as part of a traditional look, as well as by younger customers in Europe and North America where British heritage style has emerged as a key fashion trend.

I have my caps made for me in the UK. They can be matched to the fabric of a jacket, for example in a tweed fabric, which complements the male complexion, or in a plain pastel or primary colour to contrast or match what you are wearing. I have a number of examples available in store.

J. H. Cutler February 2011 Online Newsletter Welcome to my first newsletter of 2011. I trust you have enjoyed a positive start to the New Year and hope to see you in the showroom in the coming months. New Year, Extended Opening Hours After a relaxing Christmas/New Year break, which included a sea cruise to Noumea and the Isle of Pines (see example of cruising attire on the right), I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead. A year that marks the 127th anniversary of my family company, which was founded in 1884. With Diane and I now based full time at our apartment in Elizabeth Bay I will now be in the showroom five days a week between 9.30am and 5.30pm, rather than my working from home one day a week, which was the case when we were splitting our time between Sydney and the Blue Mountains. To enable me to give each client my full attention I would still ask that you make an appointment if at all possible, but if you are in the city and wish to call into the showroom, I will of course try my best to accommodate you.

New Year, New Suiting & Shirting Fabrics Soon after the start of the New Year I received new suiting fabric pattern books from Scabal, Dormeuil and Ermenegildo Zegna, and expect more new arrivals from my other fabric suppliers in the coming weeks. As they all come from suppliers who are based in the Northern Hemisphere they feature new fabrics designed for the coming European summer. I consider these light and medium weight fabrics to be ideal for year round wear here in Australia. Moving on to bespoke shirts, I continue to receive new shirting fabric pattern books from my suppliers on a very regular basis. If you haven’t recently had the opportunity to look at the multitude of options that I have available, I am sure you will have no difficulty in finding something that takes your fancy.

J. H. Cutler Blazer Buttons Last year I commissioned my good friend John Thompson, the Sydney-based Master Hand Engraver, to produce a blazer button for me featuring the J. H. Cutler crest, which forms an integral part of our corporate logo. I am now pleased to say that the work is completed and I have the buttons available in gold, silver or brass. They make a fine finishing touch to a bespoke blazer. Please have a look next time you come in.
